Our Independent Sky Broadband Review:

Sky are best know for their comprehensive and market leading satellite television, however over recent years have been making great strides in providing line rental, broadband and mobile.

Pricing for broadband is often dependent on whether you subscribe to Sky TV so we’ll only be looking at pricing that is not subject to this here, in which case if you’re a current Sky TV customer better deals may be available to you.

Sky Pricing Details Review

Sky offer a fairly comprehensive and competitive range of broadband and telephone line bundles, line only doesn’t seem to be an option here. Please note the monthly prices here include line rental (as required by the ASA) and for the ease of comparison are broken down into monthly price and total cost over 2 years.

Unlimited Broadband (non Fibre) & Line Rental

Monthly Price: £18.99 for 12 months, then £28.99 thereafter

Contract Length: 12 months

Set Up Fee: £20 new connection fee may apply (depending on who you are moving your broadband services from to Sky)

Total 2 year cost: £605.71 (£20 set up + £9.95 router delivery + 12*£18.99 + 12*£28.99)

Average monthly cost: £25.24 (£605.71/24)

Published New Line Install Cost: £39.00

What We Like About This Sky Deal:

  • Low cost for 1st 12 months
  • Free 12 month McAfee Internet Security Suite Trial
  • Unlimited Sky Broadband Allowance

What We Don’t Like About This Sky Deal

  • Only up to 17MB download speed (better download speeds may be available)
  • Out of contract £28.99 per month is expensive, so expect to have to move providers after 12 months
  • Separate contracts for broadband & Sky Talk is confusing

Sky Fibre & Line Rental

Monthly Price: £20.00 for 18 months, then £28.99 thereafter

Contract Length: 18 months

Set Up Fee: £39 one off set up fee

Total 2 year cost: £582.89 (£39 set up + £9.95 router delivery + 18*£20 + 6*£28.99)

Average monthly cost: £24.29 (£582.89/24)

Published New Line Install Cost: £39.00

What We Like About This Sky Deal:

  • Theoretically cheaper than ADSL over 2 years
  • Low cost for 1st 18 months
  • Free 12 month McAfee Internet Security Suite Trial

What We Don’t Like About This Sky Deal

  • Only 25GB download allowance which could negate the need for fibre. Download one xbox game or stream a couple of TV programs and you’ll go over your limit, in which case;
  • If you exceed your limit, Sky will either charge you per GB (plus any administration costs) which could mean you would pay more than the Unlimited package or;
  • Sky will automatically upgrade you to one of their higher usage plans with your presumed consent which will mean a hike in your monthly bill. You are able to downgrade back free of charge (having paid the excess download fee) but for these reasons we are unlikely to ever recommend this particular product.
  • Separate contracts for broadband & Sky Talk is confusing

Sky Unlimited Fibre & Line Rental

Monthly Price: £30.00 for 18 months, then £38.99 thereafter

Contract Length: 18 months

Set Up Fee: £39 one off set up fee

Total 2 year cost: £822.89 (£39 set up + £9.95 router delivery + 18*£30 + 6*£38.99)

Average monthly cost: £34.29 (£822.89/24)

Published New Line Install Cost: £39.00

What We Like About This Sky Deal:

  • Unlimited download limit
  • Free 12 month McAfee Internet Security Suite Trial

What We Don’t Like About This Sky Deal

  • There are cheaper deals for Unlimited Fibre.
  • Only 80% coverage
  • Separate contracts for broadband & Sky Talk is confusing

Sky Customer Reviews

With such a well known ISP it’s little wonder there are a lot of reviews online regarding Sky which vary from excellent (see www.choose.co.uk/guide/sky-broadband-review.html) through to poor (see www.broadband.co.uk/broadband/providers/sky/reviews/). Here are some recent comments to consider:

“I have been a customer of Sky for the last 6-7 years. However, they keep increasing the prices for existing customers, instead of showing a little appreciation for customers staying for such a long time with them. During my phone call in January, I was informed that I have to call Sky twice a year and ask them for a discount, otherwise the prices will continue to grow.” Source www.broadband.co.uk/broadband/providers/sky/reviews/

“It is really shocking service, i have only internet in the hallway and no internet in bedrooms and livingroom, they are not going to fix it and say you need to pay for engineer .im paying monthly for no internet and if i want to fix it ill be charged.shocking it doesnt have zero rating otherwise i would give zero” Source www.broadband.co.uk/broadband/providers/sky/reviews/

“Letters to the Lothian address will be answered, all other attempts failed which is ironic considering they are in the comms business. I suspect there may be 2 SKY people servicing the whole of the UK. The other option of course is to drive up to Scotland and present your query at their mailing address. Think on then move on.” Source https://uk.trustpilot.com/reviews/58d162058b67f00600d7a6dc

“In years past Sky Broadband’s customer service wasn’t always held in high esteem.

More recently, however, they’ve really outdone themselves: this time last year, Ofcom revealed that among the big providers, Sky had surged ahead of Virgin, their nearest competition in terms of customer satisfaction.

The two often swap first and second place in Ofcom’s ratings, but after being narrowly beaten by Virgin in December 2014, Sky now have an 80% customer satisfaction rating, compared to 70% for Virgin.” Source https://www.choose.co.uk/guide/sky-broadband-review.html
